CD Review: BATTLESHIP soundtrack

BATTLESHIP soundtrack | ©2012 Varese Sarabande Records

When it comes to playing Big F’n Machine Things and slo-mo shots of beautiful heroes looking very concerned as the world appears to be ending in effects Armageddon, Steve Jablonsky remains the unstoppable equivalent to Optimus Prime, blasting out irresistibly catchy rhythms for the Michael Bay school of visual overload. What makes Jablonsky’s work supreme for the multiplex is his ability to run a marathon of hyper-notes with a heroic, thematic hook, breathlessly going through every motivic permutation possible when the score isn’t allowed to stop- yet still making that exhaustion fun. On that end, BATTLESHIP’s music beds are perhaps […]Read On »

Book Review: HOW TO BE DEATH

How To Be Death - A Calliope Reaper-Jones Novel by Amber Benson | ©2012 Ace

Writer: Amber Benson Price: $7.99 Publisher: Ace Mass Market Paperback Original “I am Death” was the perfect line to conclude writer Amber Benson’s trilogy about Calliope Reaper-Jones. Callie, as her fans will recall, started as the title character in DEATH’S DAUGHTER, wanting the mundane life of a mortal but gradually accepting her supernatural destiny, including her job as the literal embodiment of Death. However, there’s no reason to keep a good, lethal force of nature down, so Calliope is back in Book Four of the series, HOW TO BE DEATH, which is also the title of the tome our heroine […]Read On »

CD Review: ONCE UPON A TIME soundtrack

ONCE UPON A TIME soundtrack | ©2012 Intrada Records

ABC’s fractured fairy tale show couldn’t have asked for a better composer than Mark Isham to tread between fantasy land and the “real world” of Storybrooke. Now with ONCE UPON A TIME’s yarns looking like they’ll be flipping for a while on Rumplestiltskin’s wheel, Intrada compiles the best of Isham’s episodic enchantments for an album the show’s fans will appreciate, as well as those appreciative of his cinematic stories. And therein lies TIME‘s best spell at fully bringing together those two worlds with Isham’s lush, yet melodically delicate sound. For while he might not have scored this kind of live […]Read On »

CD Review: DARK SHADOWS soundtrack

DARK SHADOWS soundtrack | ©2012 WaterTower Music

Of all the great, Gothic love affairs that have been artistically going on in the cinema, easily the most enjoyable, and enduring partnership belongs to composer Danny Elfman and filmmaker Tim Burton. Birds of a bizarre feather from Elfman’s joyously demonic rock band Oingo Boingo to Burton’s twisted scribblings for a Disney, it was fate that these kindred, oddball spirits would immediately hit it off from the clown hell that tormented Pee Wee Herman’s BIG ADVENTURE in 1985. The Burton / Elfman a circus of audio-visual horrors that would mostly grow increasingly frenetic through the likes of BEETLEJUICE, BATMAN RETURNS, […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: Ryan McPartlin on DAYBREAK, the end of CHUCK and CSI: MIAMI

Captain Awesome is back – and a badass. Ryan McPartlin, who endeared himself to five seasons of CHUCK viewers as the title character’s brother-in-law Devon, aka Captain Awesome, has a new gig. However, neither the role itself nor the venue for the show is typical. DAYBREAK, produced by Tim Kring of HEROES and TOUCH and directed by 24 veteran Jon Cassar, looks exactly like a pilot episode of an action mystery TV series, but instead of airing on network or cable television, it is running – one ten-minute episode every Thursday night at Daybreak2012.com. The Web series is sponsored by […]Read On »

Stars: Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Brenda Strong, Linda Gray, Josh Henderson, Jesse Metcalfe, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo Writers: Cynthia Cidre Director: Michael M. Robin Network: TNT, airs Wednesday nights Original Telecast: June 13, 2012 Growing up watching the original DALLAS series and just hearing the theme music play again for the newly rebooted DALLAS, I have to admit it put a smile on my face. Back in the ‘80s I anxiously waited ‘til Friday every week to get my Ewing family drama fix and the thunder of the theme song booming through my TV speakers only accelerated my excitement. It […]Read On »
