CD review: WAYS TO LIVE FOREVER soundtrack

WAYS TO LIVE FOREVER soundtrack | ©2011 Movie Score Media

A very inquisitive eleven year-old with leukemia decides to go through his bucket list, a journey of discovery that proves to be musically enervating in the hands of Cesar Benito with the WAYS TO LIVE FOREVER  soundtrack. With styles that are understandably all over the place as his imagination runs wild, Benito enthusiastically conveys a thirst for rhythmic life instead of wallowing in the maudlin. Eccentric percussion, perky horn comedy and a gentle piano solos all contribute to a welcome sense of whimsy that doesn’t neglect the inevitable. And while the big symphonic moments arrive with Kleenex-grabbing flourish, much of […]Read On »

CD Review: BREAKDOWN soundtrack (3,000 limited edition)

BREAKDOWN soundtrack | ©2011 La La Land Records

It’s not as if I could talk from the experience of being a film composer, let alone the skill to put two notes together in harmony. But from what I’ve witnessed, the job can be either one of the most elating, or soul-draining gigs on the creative planet. You either run in synch with the filmmaker as you give voice to their vision, or collide head-on when you don’t hear eye-to-eye. The latter’s a bumpy road that Hollywood euphemistically calls “artistic differences” – i.e. not giving a director (who can more often than not be a blistering tyrant) exactly what […]Read On »

CD Review: SUPER 8 original soundtrack

SUPER 8 soundtrack | ©2011 Varese Sarabande Records

Lots of monstrous bellowing accompanies SUPER 8, a film that sports what’s likely the most eagerly awaited Giacchino soundtrack to hit this month, especially for score fans who share the obvious movie geek love that J.J. Abrams’ put into his scary valentine to all 1970’s / 80’s things Spielberg and Amblin. Accompanying all of that director’s own production’s was the lushly adventurous music of John Williams, classic scores that could at once conjure a child’s wide-eyed wonderment towards the fantastic, then freak the bejesus out of them in the next. It’s a similar balancing act that Giacchino does here for […]Read On »

TV Review: ALPHAS – Season 1 – “Rosetta”

Ryan Cartwright in ALPHAS - Season 1 - "Rosetta" | ©2011 Syfy/Ken Woroner

Stars: David Strathairn, Ryan Cartwright, Warren Christie, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Laura Mennell, Malik Yoba, Valerie Cruz, Lianne Balaban Writer: Zak Penn, series created by Zak Penn & Michael Karnow Director: Karen Gaviola Network: Syfy, Mondays @ 10 PM Airdate: August 1, 2011 Credit ALPHAS with using science fiction to good and controversial allegorical purpose, although this episode has a pivotal plot twist we can see coming. It’s hard to blame writer Zak Penn for this – there’s a moment where we realize that the story can go down one of two paths, and he naturally picks the more interesting […]Read On »

CD review: CARS 2 original soundtrack

CARS 2 soundtrack | ©2011 Walt Disney Records

Though not  nearly as well reviewed a Pixar film as UP, but a whole lot of fun to listen to in any case, is CARS 2. Where Randy Newman’s more straight-laced approach was more fitting for the original’s desert-bound setting of Radiator Springs, Giacchino’s now taken over the driver’s seat with a considerable shot of adrenalin for this commercially flashy, globe-hopping sequel. Fans of Giacchino’s spy stylings for THE INCREDIBLES, ALIAS and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3 (not to mention his ultra-help sore for SPEED RACER) will be happy with the oodles of hip 007 / Derek Flint / Austin Powers action […]Read On »

CD Review: HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 soundtrack

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 soundtrack | ©2011 Warner Bros.

Alexandre Desplat is back in the HARRY house to weave his musical spell with HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2. But if things seemed more than a bit wispy and time-biding after the last two POTTERS, nothing will prepare you for this literally smashing wrap up, especially with a spectacular musical finish that brings John Williams’ spirit back to the Halls of Hogwarts like never before. Having impressed with the epic franchise fantasy scores for THE GOLDEN COMPASS and THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, Desplat thankfully raises the scoring stakes with his second POTTER big time, his brew […]Read On »

TV Review: WILFRED – Season 1 – “Anger”

Jason Gann in WILFRED - Season 1 - "Anger" | ©2011 FX/Ray Mickshaw

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Dorian Brown, Nestor Carbonell Writers: Sivert Glarum & Michael Jamin, series created by Jason Gann & Adam Zwar, adapted for American television by David Zuckerman Director: Victor Nelli, Jr. Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: August 11, 2011 Given how WILFRED as a series sends up everything, almost the last thing one would expect in an episode is a note of sincere emotion, but that’s just how “Anger” ends. On its way, it deals once more with Ryan’s (Elijah Wood) awesome passivity in the face of verbal/emotional abuse, Wilfred’s (Jason Gann) diabolical behavior, some […]Read On »
