CD Review: SCREAM: THE DELUXE EDITION soundtrack (2,000 limited edition)

SCREAM soundtrack | ©2011 Varese Sarabande Records

Sure horror scores before 1996 raised their voice more than occasionally. But it took Marco Beltrami to send the genre into a true fugue state with the cacophony of SCREAM’s outrageous symphonic kills, creating a whole new impactful sound for slashers and demons alike, not to mention setting the thematic template for three more franchise scores to come. Music fans with subtler tastes might chide SCREAM for being over the top. Yet that was exactly the right tone for writer Kevin Smith’s satiric takedown of the genre. Though he himself might not have been into a horror geek like SCREAM’s […]Read On »

TV Review: WAREHOUSE 13 – Season 3 premiere – “The New Guy”

Joanne Kelly in WAREHOUSE 13 - Season 2 - "The New Guy" | ©2011 Sysy/Steve Wilkie

Stars: Eddie McClintock, Joanne Kelly, Saul Rubinek, Genelle Williams, Allison Scagliotti, Aaron Ashmore, Jaime Murray, Ashley Williams Network: Syfy, Mondays @ 9 PM Airdate: July 11, 2011 When we last saw the WAREHOUSE 13 team (not counting the out-of-sequence Christmas episode), a somber Myka (Joanne Kelly) had decided to leave her Warehouse duties for fear of accidentally contributing to the destruction of the world, as she felt she’d almost done. In “The New Guy,” enter – at first reluctantly – ATF Special Agent Steve Jinks (Aaron Ashmore), who has the ability to detect when someone is lying. He’s pretty surprised […]Read On »

TV Review: ALPHAS – Season One Premiere – “Pilot”

Ryan Cartwright, Laura Mennell, Malik Yoba, David Strathairn, Warren Christie and Azita Ghanizada in ALPHAS - Season 1 | ©2011 Syfy/Justin Stephens

Stars: David Strathairn, Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Azita Ghanizada, Ryan Cartwright, Laura Mennell Writers: Zak Penn & Michael Karnow Director: Jack Bender Network: Syfy, Mondays @ 10 PM (note: pilot episode is 90 minutes) Airdate: July 11, 2011 Shows about people with special abilities come in all flavors. ALPHAS is much lower-key than HEROES or even SANCTUARY, while still having a solid grounding in science-fiction. Moreover, the characters created by Zak Penn & Michael Karnow are engaging on their own and in their interactions. David Straithairn as neurologist/psychiatrist/team leader Lee Rosen is so unassumingly erudite and supportive that you pretty […]Read On »

TV Review: LEVERAGE – Season 4 – “The 15 Minutes Job”

Beth Riesgraf and Michael Gladis in LEVERAGE - Season 4 - "The 15 Minutes Job" | ©2011 TNT

Stars: Timothy Hutton, Gina Bellman, Aldis Hodge, Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf, Michael Gladis, Leon Rippy Writer: Josh Schaer Director: Marc Roskin Network: TNT, Sundays @ 9 PM Airdate: July 10, 2011 The title of LEVERAGE’s episode “The 15 Minutes Job” refers to Andy Warhol’s oft-quoted saying about the amount of time everybody supposedly will have to be famous. The plot concerns a neat reversal, where instead of going after famous bigwigs abusing their power, Nate (Timothy Hutton) and friends find themselves going up against a foe who is pretty similar to the LEVERAGE team in his methods. Nate is approached […]Read On »

TV Review: FALLING SKIES – Season 1 – “Silent Kill”

Sarah Carter in FALLING SKIES - Season 1 - "Silent Kill" | ©2011 TNT/Ken Woroner

Stars: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight, Connor Jessup, Sechelle Gabriel, Mpho Koaho, Peter Shinkoda, Colin Cunningham and Sarah Sanguin Carter Writer: Joe Weisberg Director: Fred Toye Network: TNT, Sunday nights Original Telecast: July 10, 2011 In another major mis-step for the promising series FALLING SKIES, “Silent Kill” once again relies on the series standard formula of a bunch of world-weary dialogue at the beginning of the episode (usually about surviving), a dangerous mission, and a coda that offers hope. Of course, this formula, five episodes in, is wearing considerably thin. It also doesn’t help that […]Read On »

DVD Review: MIDNIGHT MOVIE: THE KILLER CUT

MIDNIGHT MOVIE - THE KILLER CUT DVD | ©2011 Bigfoot Ascendant

Stars: Rebekah Brandes, Daniel Bonjour, Greg Cirulnick, Mandell Maughan, Justin Baric, Brea Grant, Lee Main, Arthur Roberts Writers: Mark Garbett and Jack Messitt Director: Jack Messitt Distributor: Bigfoot Ascendant Release Date: June 14, 2011 It would be easy from the title to mistake MIDNIGHT MOVIE: THE KILLER CUT for a sequel to the original 2008 MIDNIGHT MOVIE. It is instead a director’s cut of the film, with a new commentary track from director/co-writer Jack Messitt and some enlivening extras, including a good behind the scenes look at the film’s copious makeup effects. Unless one has seen the first cut very […]Read On »

CD Review: UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT soundtrack

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT soundtrack | ©2011 Nathan Furst

Imagine a rom-com score for a meeting between Wall Street and The Mob, and you might hear the bubbly orchestral jazz of Nathan Furst. For a guy who’s usually busy scoring killer alligators and crocodiles, the melodically sparkling production values of UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT are a terrifically apt way for Furst to tell the world he’s not going to get pulled back in. The menace here is definitely of the more playful type, as a slicked back financial man about town tries to take the old family business legit, even if his Costra Nostra friends would rather break heads than […]Read On »

TV Review: WILFRED – Season 1 – “Fear”

Ethan Suplee, Elijah Wood and Jason Gann in WILFRED - Season 1 - "Fear" | ©2011 FX/Michael Yarish

Stars: Elijah Wood, Jason Gann, Ethan Suplee Writer: Eric Weinberg Director: Randall Einhorn Network: FX, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: July 7, 2011 In WILFRED’s third episode “Fear,”  Elijah Wood remains reliably engaging as protagonist Ryan but, strangely, his relationship with Wilfred (Jason Gann) – a dog that Ryan and only Ryan sees as a man in a dog suit – is beginning to wear out its welcome. This isn’t because Gann is any less committed in his weirdly immersive performance as the anthropomorphic canine, but rather because Wilfred is objectionable. If Wilfred is just a projection of Ryan’s subconscious, […]Read On »
