TV Review: BOB’S BURGERS – Season 1 – “Human Flesh” – Season Premiere

The Belchers on BOB'S BURGERS - Season 1 | ©2011 Fox

Created by Loren Bouchard, BOB’S BURGERS is the latest attempt to find something new, within the familiar family comedy dynamic, but the show tries to hard to be crude and not hard enough to be funny.

This is the kind of comedy that would feel right at home on Comedy Central., but on network television, it feels dragged out and desperate.

Clip of the Day: Jim Carrey gets freaky on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE

Jim Carrey and Taran Killam in SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE - Season 36 | ©2011 NBC

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE has always been hit and miss, but with the usually hilarious Jim Carrey hosting, one only hoped the show would have been better than it was. However, among the mediocrity, there was this deranged, short sketch that got it right.  Set in an amusement park ride, it used Carrey (and SNL cast members Taran Killam and Bill Hader) in a weird, nightmarish scenario. The sketch didn’t drag, it wasn’t redundant, it got in, and got out – with tons of laughs. Check it out below to see what we mean:

CD Review: Christian Kane – THE HOUSE RULES

Christian Kane - THE HOUSE RULES

Distributor: Bigger Picture Group/Outlaw Saints Music Suggested Retail Price: $13.99 Although THE HOUSE RULES is his first major label release, Christian Kane has been around a good while now as a singer/songwriter. Those familiar with his music via live performance and/or independently-produced earlier records can testify that he is consistently passionate, entertaining and smooth on the ears. Good news: THE HOUSE RULES adds big-league production value to the tracks without in any way diluting Kane’s essential sound or sense of fun. Produced by Bob Ezrin and Jimmie Lee Sloas, both of whom do double-duty as musicians on the album, THE […]Read On »

The X List: Assignment X’s Best of 2010 – Movies

TRUE GRIT poster | ©2010 Paramount Pictures

The best films of 2010, in the opinion of this reviewer (who still has to catch up with THE FIGHTER, WINTER’S BONE and several other acclaimed releases): THE SOCIAL NETWORK Normally, people working with computers is one of the most boring things that can be put on screen. Director David Fincher, writer Aaron Sorkin and an across-the-board brilliant cast headed up by Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake leave the computers in the background and illustrate the dynamics of friendship and ambition in a way that is remarkably compelling and universal. The fact that the film is about the […]Read On »

While talking about his new sitcom LOVE THAT GIRL! set to debut January 10 on TV One, ASSIGNMENT X caught up with star Phil Morris to chat about the new series as well as his character of John Jones/Martian Manhunter on the CW’s SMALLVILLE. Currently in its final year, we asked Morris if he’d like to return to SMALLVILLE and wrap out his arc, which he admits he’d love to do. “I’ve called them a few times,” he admits. “They love my character and love me. I’m not an integral part of that show as far as they’re concerned. After […]Read On »

TV Review: V – SEASON 2 – “Red Rain” – Season Premiere

Logan Huffman and Elizabeth Mitchell in V - Season Two - "Red Rain" |©2011 ABC/Marcel Williams

Stars: Elizabeth Mitchell, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Morena Baccarin, Laura Vandervoort, Scott Wolf, Logan Huffman, Charles Mesure Writers: Scott Rosenbaum and Gregg Andrew Hurwitz Director: Bryan Spicer Network: ABC, airs Tuesdays @ 9 p.m. Original Telecast: Jan. 4, 2011 I had high hopes for the reboot of V when it aired last year. The classic series was fun and had some great moments but it was always cheeseball with lousy special effects and props. However, what made up for it was great storytelling and of a resistance that actually was organized, motivated and did something. The first season of the […]Read On »

The X List: Assignment X’s Best of 2010 – Albums and Singles

Gaslight Anthem - AMERICAN SLANG

10 FAVORITE ALBUMS (in alphabetical order) Daft Punk – TRON: LEGACY soundtrack There were some great soundtracks this year, but damn, these techno boys created the best John Carpenter/Alan Howarth score that the never wrote. The movie may be polarizing, but this soundtrack will make you appreciate being a user. Frightened Rabbit – THE WINTER OF MIXED DRINKS A wonderful, alternative rock find. A group whose music seeps with angst and emotion, while not sounding mainstream. This is everything Arcade Fire’s THE SUBURBS album should have been. Gaslight Anthem – AMERICAN SLANG A Jersey band with a heavy Boss influence, […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: CAPRICA’s Sasha Roiz gets into mob mentality

Sasha Roiz in CAPRICA - Season One | ©2010 Syfy/photo by Jeff Weddell

The storyline is blowing up – literally – on Syfy’s CAPRICA, the prequel series to the network’s acclaimed remake of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. There are monotheistic terrorists from Gemenon running amok, the persona of one dead girl wandering through cyberspace as an immortal, another girl in the giant body of a prototype Cylon – and then there are the Adama brothers, Joseph, played by Esai Morales, a very conflicted lawyer (and father of young William, who will grow up to be played by Edward James Olmos on BSG), and his brother Sam, played by Sasha Roiz, who is a professional mobster. Molly Quinn in CASTLE - Season Three - "Anatomy of a Murder" | ©2010 ABC/Jordin Althaus

Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), mystery writer extraordinaire, is enjoying his third season of crime-solving on ABC’s Monday-night hit CASTLE. Castle is able to beguile most women – even Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), the prickly NYPD detective he follows around for inspiration, is beginning to fall for him. But there are two females Castle can’t sneak anything past – his much-married Broadway actress mother Martha Rodgers, played by Susan Sullivan, and his bright teenaged daughter Alexis, played by Molly Quinn.
