Exclusive Interview: BEING HUMAN takes a bite out of Sam Witwer and Mark Pellegrino

On BEING HUMAN, a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost share a house and their mutual yet disparate attempts to achieve something like the title condition. The actors playing the series’ two principal vampires, Sam Witwer as roommate Aidan and Mark Pellegrino as police lieutenant (and Aidan’s sire) Bishop, likewise share a few things, like a background in cult hits. Pellegrino was the quasi-saintly Jacob (Pellegrino jokingly refers to him as “diet Jesus”) on LOST, the Earthly incarnation of Lucifer on SUPERNATURAL, Rita’s violent ex-husband on DEXTER; Witwer also appeared on DEXTER, as well as being Davis Bloome, aka Doomsday, […]Read On »

TCA 2011: Showtime says DEXTER has life beyond Season 6

While speaking at today’s CBS Winter TCA press day in Pasadena, CA, newly appointed Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins acknowledged that he hopes DEXTER has a long life on Showtime. “I think there’s a lot of life left in DEXTER,” he admits. “DEXTER was up 11 percent in its 5th season which defies the usual ratings decline. The audience is still coming to it, and it’s not a plot driven show. It’s fundamentally a character driven show. A lot of what the show is tracking is the evolution and the maturation of Dexter. He’s barely an adolescent in the way […]Read On »

TV Review: DEXTER – Season 5 – “The Big One”

Mindful of the fact that there’s probably no increasing over the stab to the heart that was the Season Four finale, the DEXTER team go in another direction as they conclude Season Five on a bittersweet note that feels just right.

Exclusive Interview: DEXTER actor Desmond Harrington sees blood

On DEXTER (which airs its season finale on Sunday night), Michael C. Hall’s serial killer protagonist has lots of problems. One of these would be Miami police detective Joey Quinn, played by Desmond Harrington. Quinn is the partner and sometimes lover of Dexter’s sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) – and he’s also the one person at the station who thinks there’s something not quite right about the newly-widowed blood spatter expert. Harrington takes five with ASSIGNMENT X regarding his suspicious character, his appearance on GOSSIP GIRL and playing a cop. TAKE 1: Season Four of DEXTER was pretty traumatic for a […]Read On »

TV Review: DEXTER – SEASON 5 – “Hop a Freighter”

In “Hop a Freighter,” things come to a head, with Dexter (Michael C. Hall) discovering the surveillance equipment ex-cop Liddy (Peter Weller) has planted in his apartment. Wrongly believing the spy cameras were planted by Deb’s (Jennifer Carpenter) current partner/love interest Quinn (Desmond Harrington), Dexter tries to catch him in the act. Instead, Liddy catches Dexter, but of course Liddy seriously underestimates the table-turning abilities of our guy.

Stars: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, Lauren Velez, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, David Zayas, Julia Stiles, Jonny Lee Miller, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Scott Grimes, Peter Weller, Angela Bettis Writer: Scott Reynolds Director: Keith Gordon Network: Showtime, Sunday nights Airdate: November 28, 2010 There is at least one jaw-dropper of a moment in “In the Beginning,” and it’s not the finale where Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and Lumen (Julia Stiles) finally get together and Dexter reaches the realization that he’s found someone who neither sees him as nor needs him to be a monster. It’s satisfying, but we’ve seen this coming […]Read On »

TV Review: DEXTER – SEASON 5 – “Teenage Wasteland”

A lot of things get blown open in the latest episode of DEXTER called “Teenage Wasteland” and all of them matter. Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), confined to file room duty, finds DNA evidence that there’s more than one perpetrator in the barrel girls” case. Deb convinces a reluctant Lt. Laguerta (Lauren Velez) to reopen the case, previously considered closed. Deb is shocked when her boyfriend Quinn (Desmond Harrington) says he loves her – and shocked again when Quinn admits that he suspected Deb’s brother Dexter (Michael C. Hall) might be Trinity Killer associate Kyle Butler, though he now wants to leave it alone. Liddy (Peter Weller), the disgraced cop Quinn hired as a private investigator, doesn’t want to leave it alone, and has pictures of Dexter and Lumen (Julia Stiles) doing something late at night on Dexter’s boat with big plastic bags.

TV Review: DEXTER – SEASON 5 – ‘Take It!’

Over its five seasons, DEXTER has come close to what happens in “Take It” a few times. Dexter (Michael C. Hall) found a measure of mutual understanding with fellow killers Lila (Jaime Murray) in Season Two and Miguel (Jimmy Smits) in Season Three, but neither of them had a code and both eventually became his deadly nemeses due to their differences. Now, however, Dexter has Lumen (Julia Stiles), whose motivations are sympathetic – she feels an urgent need to avenge her rape, torture and captivity at the hands of a ring of serial killers, the kind of men who are Dexter’s natural prey.

TV Review: DEXTER – SEASON 5 – ‘Circle Us’

The DEXTER episode “Circle Us” may be a good indicator that when Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is mulling things over rather than reaching epiphanies, the episode tends to feel like its holding back, even when its action lunges forward. Such is the case here.

TV Review: DEXTER – SEASON 5 – ‘Everything is Illumenated’

Julia Stiles in DEXTER - Season 5 - "Everything is Illumenated" | ©2010 Showtime/Randy Tepper

“Everything is Illumenated” (the idiosyncratic spelling refers to both the character and the blood-illuminated substance) is a DEXTER episode in which a great deal, albeit not everything, is in fact illuminated. We see what gets under Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) skin, we learn a lot about Lumen (Julia Stiles), we see the dangerous double game Quinn (Desmond Harrington) is playing and Batista (David Zayas) and LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) start communicating. All this plus two murders and baby Harrison’s first words make for quite a show.
