Actor Nyambi Nyambi joined NBC’s Tuesday-night comedy NIGHT COURT in its second and current season, which also streams on Peacock, as court clerk Wyatt Cooper.

The original NIGHT COURT ran on NBC 1984-1992. Created by Reinhold Weege, the show follows the unconventional events in Manhattan’s night court. Dan Rubin developed the new version, which stars Melissa Rauch as Judge Abby Stone, daughter of the original edition’s Judge Harry T. Stone, who was played by the late Harry Anderson. Original NIGHT COURT cast member John Larroquette returns in his role as attorney Dan Fielding.

Nyambi, originally from Oklahoma, has been in multiple feature films, including IN HER NAME and SLEEPLESS. He was a series regular on the comedy MIKE & MOLLY and the courtroom drama THE GOOD FIGHT.

During a NIGHT COURT set visit sponsored by Warner Bros. for the Winter 2024 Television Critics Association press tour, Nyambi speaks on a Q&A panel for the series, then takes time for a one-on-one follow-up conversation.

For those who may be confused, Nyambi has the “a” sound of “Sammy,” rather than “Palm.” He says people have a history of mispronouncing his name. “When I was in high school, I was on the basketball team, and they were calling up the starting five. ‘Starting at forward, Matt Wells. Starting at the other forward, Robert Cedar. Starting at center, Dale Summers. Starting at guard, Jason Berson.’ Then it came to my name, and there was a long pause, then a laugh, and then he tried to say it as fast as possible. He goes, ‘Yumyum Yumbia.’ So, now I’m like, you know what? ‘Nyambi [short ‘a’ ],’ ‘Nyambi [closed stressed syllable],’ are the two acceptable ones.”

What can Nyambi tell us about Wyatt? “Wyatt is a jack of all trades They say ‘master of none’; I’d say, ‘Master of one.’ He’s still just trying to find what that one is. In the show, I am the court clerk, the person who puts together all of the cases, does all of the paperwork, gets everything ready for the upcoming night in NIGHT COURT.

“And I’m a single dad, I have two daughters, I’m an aspiring lawyer, in law school, so I’m doing all this at the same time, but I literally have taken on every job in the world, and so any time they need something done, ‘Oh, yeah, I did something like that.’ So, not that I’m a master at it, otherwise I wouldn’t be here, but I’ve dabbled in literally everything. So, for me, I’m out to prove to my daughters that you can do anything you can set your mind to.”

Doing television in front of a live studio audience, Nyambi says, is “the ultimate confirmation that you’re funny, right? … It’s so electric. Like [Larroquette] said, when you get the laugh and you have that moment of where, ‘Okay, I’ve got that laugh,’ it’s like oxygen. Because then you breathe that laugh in, and then boom, the next thing that comes out is even funnier. So, it’s really a beautiful thing.”

Nyambi also takes time to praise his castmates and the show’s creative personnel. “I want to say these guys have been amazing. They’ve been amazing in terms of welcoming me to this set, to this environment. I really hit the ground running because of how easy they made it. They’ve all been so lovely, so amazing, so brilliant and tolerating the times when I’m not funny.”

“Doesn’t happen,” Rauch assures him.

“But the rare times I’m not funny …” Nyambi acts like he’s contemplating this. “Yeah, so, I’m trying to think of when that was. You know what? Never mind. They’ve been amazing, and it’s been awesome. And this is a show I grew up watching, and getting a chance to go back and watch the original, and then being here and then meeting John [Larroquette]. I was scared of John because I just watched nine seasons of him, and he’s been nothing but lovely. As has everybody. I think that’s my quote for nice things to say this week. But yeah, it’s been a great time, and I’m looking forward to more great times.”

What would Nyambi most like people to know about this season of NIGHT COURT? “I would love people to know that this season is hilarious, this season is great, [there are] a bunch of great guest stars, and just more fun. Funnier than ever.”
