TV Review: THE WALKING DEAD – Season 1 – “Vatos”

In the latest episode of AMC’s great new zombie series THE WALKING DEAD, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) takes a team back to the city to check on Merle and retrieve that desperately-needed bag of guns while the rest of the camp reacts to Jim’s strange grave-digging behavior. Has the man become a prophet, dreaming of death amongst the survivors, and if so, who in their little party will suffer a horrible fate before the day is out? And is Rick really just like a certain whip-wielding archaeologist, incomplete without his trusty hat? “Vatos” inevitably draws added scrutiny as it’s the single […]Read On »

From the Halls of the 2010 AMERICAN FILM MARKET

AFM logo

The week-long AMERICAN FILM MARKET just completed its 2010 edition (it ran at the Santa Monica Lowes Hotel from November 3 to November 10) as distributors met with domestic and foreign buyers to buy, sell and pre-sell a whole assortment of action, horror, comedies and dramas. The quality of the products always varies, but the market is a great barometer of what trends in independent filmmaking are waning and rising. ASSIGNMENT X checked out the halls for a couple of days to get the scoop this year, and here’s what some people had to say about the state of the […]Read On »

TV Review: FRINGE – SEASON 3 – “The Abducted”

©2010 Fox | Anna Torv in FRINGE - Season Three - "The Abducted"

It is a shame more people aren’t watching FRINGE. Since moving to Thursdays last year, the show has steadily declined in ratings. I like to believe it is because of the heated competition rather than the fact people have lost interest in the show. Seriously, how could anyone lose interest in this show? Week-after-week it continues to amaze and deliver the goods. This season especially has been quite enjoyable with the show alternating between the two universes each with their own perils and monsters. Granted, the monsters “over here” have been mostly generated from the bad guys “over there” trying […]Read On »

Movie Review: THE NEXT THREE DAYS

© 2010 Lionsgate | THE NEXT THREE DAYS poster

THE NEXT THREE DAYS is an English-language remake, apparently quite faithful, of the French thriller POUR ELLE. In the new version, scripted and directed by Paul Haggis (CRASH), Russell Crowe plays a husband so devoted that, when it looks like his wife is going to spend the rest of her life in prison, he decides to break her out and flee the country, even though he has no previous criminal expertise whatsoever. This last is the most prominent of the several plot engines propelling THE NEXT THREE DAYS. Most movies about something as large-scale as a prison breakout have at […]Read On »

Interview: ‘THE BIG C’ Actor OLIVER PLATT talks TV, Red Sox and ‘2012’

© 2010 Showtime | Oliver Platt in THE BIG C - Season One

In Showtime’s new dramedy THE BIG C (which just wrapped up its first season this week), erstwhile suburban housewife Cathy Jamison, played by Laura Linney, turns her life upside-down when she is given a diagnosis of terminal cancer. She doesn’t immediately tell her husband Paul, who is bewildered by Cathy’s sudden (to him) change in behavior. Platt, who played White House Counsel Oliver Babish on THE WEST WING from 2001-2005, with a massive resume of starring and costarring roles in film, TV and stage, took some time to talk about playing Paul and a few other noteworthy recent gigs. AX: […]Read On »

Movie Review: MADE IN DAGENHAM

© 2010 Sony Pictures Classics | MADE IN DAGENHAM movie poster

With all of the arguments today about labor unions, MADE IN DAGENHAM is certainly timely. The film, directed by Nigel Close and written by William Ivory, concerns the real strike that occurred in 1968 at the Ford auto factory in Dagenham, England, when a one-day walkout by the plant’s 187 female workers over their designation as “unskilled” workers (and the commensurate lower wages, vs. the 50,000 skilled males then employed there) turned into a full-on strike for equal pay for equal work. We can see the cause is just. Stitching car seats together is not something that can be done […]Read On »

CD Review: ALIEN RESURRECTION

© 2010 La La Land Records | Alien Resurrection Soundtrack

The release of Fox’s mega-ALIEN ANTHOLOGY collection on Blu-ray is a particularly good time to revisit the saga’s scores, which have now gotten virtually complete releases on CD and isolated DVD tracks. While we’re still waiting on a full album release for Elliot Goldenthal’s wonderfully strange score to ALIEN 3, another major check has been added for what might be the most unsung score in the series with the release of John Frizzell’s music to ALIEN RESURRECTION, which hits from La La Land as a two-CD edition that collects the complete score, its alternate takes and the original 1997 soundtrack. Movie Review: HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PT. 1

© 2010 Warner Bros. | HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PT. 1 movie poster

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PT. 1 gets off to a bit of a wobbly start, as even those who are familiar with J.K. Rowling’s series of novels and the previous HARRY POTTER films (which is to say, the majority of the audience) may need a little while to remember just where we’re at in the story. Steve Kloves’ screenplay assumes we remember the salient facts from the last film, HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE, where the ailing Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) was killed by Dark Arts teacher Professor Snape (Alan Rickman), to the general horror […]Read On »
