Based loosely on Ben Mezrich’s nonfiction tome THE ACCIDENTAL BILLIONAIRES about the origins of the social networking site Facebook, THE SOCIAL NETWORK has been accused of playing with the facts. This probably doesn’t matter unless one is writing a thesis about the real origins of […]Read On »

TV Review: LIE TO ME – Season 3 – “Killer App” – Season Finale

Tim Roth and Ashton Holmes in LIE TO ME - Season 3 - "Killer App" | ©2011 Fox/Greg Gayne

Yes, this is the season finale of LIE TO ME, and I know the rumor mill has this being LIE TO ME’s series finale (and trust me, it is). So with that knowledge, it’s pretty insulting that the best they could do is shamelessly ride the coattails of THE SOCIAL NETWORK by giving us “Killer App.”

The Year in Review: The Best Scores of 2014 – The Runner Ups and Composers To Watch

THE BEST SCORES OF 2014 – The Runner Up’s and Composers To Watch BIG BAD WOLVES  (Frank Ilfman / Movie Score Media) Stop me if you’ve heard the same cinematic tune about a perceived miscreant tied into a chair for all manner of mental, and physical torture to be performed upon him. Thankfully, the Israeli breakout film BIG BAD WOLVES whistles the genre song with smashing black-humored suspense, as captured with a thunderous score by Frank Ilfman, who twists a thrillingly mean symphonic knife as he relentlessly veers between frantic action and sly, Herrmann-esque strings as a set-up for ironic, […]Read On »

Interview: EARTH TO ECHO composer Joseph Trapanese phones home

EARTH TO ECHO soundtrack | ©2014 Relativity Music Group

Listen to such pulsing wavelengths as Fall on Your Sword’s ANOTHER EARTH, Nathan Johnson’s LOOPER Nima Fakhara’s THE SIGNAL or Steven Price’s Oscar-winning GRAVITY, and you’ll pick up loud and clear on the burgeoning film scoring genre I prefer to call “alt. sci-fi.” It’s a plane of electro-orchestral existence where traditional symphonic melody (or at least the spirit of it) gets fused with an acoustical rock and roll vibe that can veer from psychedelia to grunge. Organic samples of everything from scraped metal to car engines are warped into new, unearthly entities, joining with electronic percussion and atmospheres that can […]Read On »

Interview: SAVAGES composer Adam Peters goes from Echo and the Bunnymen to soundtracks

SAVAGES / ©2012 Universal Pictures

Oliver Stone may have started out as one of the cinemas great agent provocateurs. However, over nearly the last two decades, the frenzied abandon of Stone’s work has felt more long in the tooth than anything- just plain tired if you will. Yet if we were expecting Stone’s auspicious career to end with a mellow Hollywood wipeout, leave it to SAVAGES‘ border-hopping tsunami of sex, drugs and violence to mark the return of celluloid excessiveness’ Big Kahuna. And playing musical wingman to the wildly entertaining ride is another seasoned rebel named Adam Peters. A major force behind the raucous rhythms […]Read On »
