CRIMSON PEAK highlights Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Release for Feb. 9, 2016

CRIMSON PEAK | © 2016 Universal Pictures Home Entertainment

A slow week, which is probably to be expected after such a huge roll out of films and TV last week. Unfortunately, not that great of stuff but sometimes that’s how it goes. Movies: CRIMSON PEAK – There is something to be said about ghost movies and period pieces. They sometimes work and can be fairly amazing to look at. On the other hand, it risks becoming too bloated with so many costumes and crazy beautiful images that it derails the storyline. CRIMSON PEAK, unfortunately, falls into this category. It is a beautiful movie with vivid images, costumes, set pieces […]Read On »

BRIDGE OF SPIES highlights Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Release for Feb. 2, 2016

BRIDGE OF SPIES | © 2016 Disney Home Video

Yeah, so a lot of stuff this week. Beginning of the month is usually a packed one but this week is crazy (and time consuming on my part). So check out what’s available on video this week. Movies: BRIDGE OF SPIES – During the height of the Cold War just before the Soviets erected the wall in East Berlin, a Russian spy is taken captive and put on trial for crimes against the U.S. An insurance attorney (Tom Hanks) is brought in to give him a proper defense but given the time it was anything but fair and he is […]Read On »

KRAMPUS: Composer Douglas Pipes unleashes music for the anti-Claus – Interview

KRAMPUS soundtrack | ©2015 Back Lot Music

If Douglas Pipes comes knocking at your door with a bag begging for candy, or drops into your chimney with a sack of toys to give, it’s best to run the other way from a composer with a knack for turning child-friendly holidays into hell. But for those Scrooges who delight in hearing merriment tuned to the key of frenzied misery, Pipes’ seditious way of playing two of the year’s most beloved days as humorously black-hearted apocalypses is music to the ears – no more so than on the happiest eve of all as he twists all that is musically […]Read On »

BURYING THE EX: Composer Joseph LoDuca buries the EX – Interview

BURYING THE EX soundtrack | ©2015 Lakeshore Records

Few composers who continually get pulled back into a genre that gave them birth have as much fun both screaming, and laughing about continually being clawed by their fateful, creative relationship than Joseph LoDuca. Born in Michigan around the same time as another native with whom he’d be joined at the hip, LoDuca was well into fulfilling his rock and roll aspirations with the big town likes of Jeff Beck and Bob Seger before getting the call to enter a possessed cabin in the backwoods. The result of his impressively frenetic, orchestral score done a dime was the beginning of […]Read On »

CD Review: STORMY WEATHER soundtrack

STORMY WEATHER soundtrack | ©2015 Kritzerland

After their terrific release of Patrick Williams’ Italian-flavored underscore for BREAKING AWAY that coincided with Twilight Time’s blu ray movie edition, Kritzerland once again works in conjunction with the label to put out a truly historical, two-CD of one of mainstream Hollywood’s few forays into black entertainment. But beyond the song made eternal by Lena Horne for this 1943 20th Century Fox production, STORMY WEATHER also stands as one of the great American songbook scores when it came to showing black culture’s big splash on the nation’s music songbook. Done in the all-star cavalcade style made popular from the advent […]Read On »
