Marvel Studios’ held the World Premiere of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR on April 23rd in Hollywood. This was such a huge premiere that Hollywood Blvd. was closed from Highland Avenue to Sycamore. CD Review: NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB soundtrack

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB soundtrack | ©2015 Varese Sarabande Records

When looking for Hollywood scores filled with unabashedly glittering themes and melody, you might as well feel like visiting a museum. However, Alan Silvestri thankfully remains anything but a fossil in this practice. As a composer who’s been applying this relatively ancient orchestral approach since the long-lost days of BACK TO THE FUTURE, Silvestri has remained vibrant in conveying a child-like sense of magic and adventure when its come to fantastical wish fulfillment, no more so than in his continuing trips to this Fox family franchise, of which SECRET OF THE TOMB threatens to be the last admission. If so, […]Read On »

CD Review: COSMOS: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY soundtrack

COSMOS: A SPACETIME ODYSSEY soundtrack | ©2014 Cosmos Studios Music

Few composers have conjectured about weird science with Alan Silvestri’s sense of cosmic wonder, whether it’s been seeking alien life inhabiting our inner space in THE ABYSS, time travelling BACK TO THE FUTURE or talking with an intergalactic craft voiced by Pee-Wee Herman for FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR. So it’s only natural that Silvestri now gets to board a spaceship of the imagination first piloted on TV 24 years ago by Carl Sagan, whose film adaptation of CONTACT ranks as one of the composer’s most awe-inspiring scores. It’s that music’s touching quality of intergalactic hope that now infuses COSMOS’ pretty […]Read On »

CD Review: FANDANGO soundtrack

FANDANGO soundtrack | ©2013 Intrada Records

Though it barely got a release, 1985s 1971 road trip movie would go down as one of the latter decade’s most-loved cult movies, inspiring the admiration of “groovers” the world over. And while much of Alan Silvestri’s exceptional score would get left on the way to Mexico in favor of exceptionally used Pat Metheny tunes, FANDANGO stands as a landmark in the composer’s career as his first major venture into orchestral scoring. Thankfully Intrada knows where Silvesti’s symphonic champagne bottle is buried with this effervescent release. Joining Kevin Costner’s draft-dodging road trip after the electronic percussion heavy scores of CHiPS […]Read On »

CD Review: THE BODYGUARD soundtrack (3,500 edition)

THE BODYGUARD soundtrack | ©2012 La La Land Records

It’s a great thing to be a composer on a diva-driven film whose soundtrack will go through every precious metal LP there is to hang on a best-selling wall. Not so much for score fans hoping to hear the underscore amidst the pop hits, but for the musician who has one or two contractually mandated cuts that will give him a taste of the platinum pie. Now twenty years after the release of THE BODYGUARD, and several months after the sad death of its superstar Whitney Houston, those who are equally enamored of Alan Silvestri have finally gotten their complete […]Read On »

Ultron | ©2012 Marvel Comics

We already know – SPOILERS! – Thanos is on the way in the next THE AVENGERS movie, but what other famous foes from Avengers stories of the past deserve a shot at big screen stardom? After all, heroes are only as good as the villains they face. We list a few here, but they’re only suggestions; and no, Count Nefaria is not on this list. Complain all you like in the comments about that glaring omission or the lack of Baron Zemo, but remember that this is just one list for our villainous THE AVENGERS 2 and 3 films; you […]Read On »

Cobie Smulders has long been hailed for her comedic prowess as Robin Sherbatsky on HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, now gearing up for its eighth season on CBS. However, with writer/director Joss Whedon’s box-office superhero THE AVENGERS from Disney and Marvel, Smulders shows off her action star side as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill, running, sliding and shooting with the best of them. There are big differences in doing a weekly TV comedy series and a giant studio action feature film, Smulders notes. “It’s definitely a shift in schedule,” says Smulders. “I made it a point to do a lot of […]Read On »

On May 3, 2013, IRON MAN 3 hits theaters and the big question will be — how much has THE AVENGERS given that franchise an even bigger push into the boxoffice stratosphere? Interview: THE AVENGERS composer Alan Silvestri makes the Avengers assemble

THE AVENGERS soundtrack | ©2012 Intrada Records

If you’re looking for a composer whose genre soundtracks seem to be printed in four colors as opposed to written with musical notes, then Alan Silvestri’s scores would be equivalent to the bright hues that compose comic book art. From the brawny militarism of PREDATOR, ERASER and JUDGE DREDD to the mythic exploits of THE MUMMY RETURNS, VAN HELSING and BEOWULF, Alan Silvestri’s talents have grown from the disco motorcycle beats of CHiPS to becoming the embodiment of do-gooding orchestral might. It’s music that captures any big kid’s dream of fighting cosmic evil, role-playing that’s accomplished with massive symphonic themes […]Read On »

CD Review: YOUNG GUNS 2 soundtrack

YOUNG GUNS 2 soundtrack | ©2011 Intrada Records

Hollywood’s revisionist youthquake movement really hit dead center when a “Brat Pack” gang headed by Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland and Lou Diamond Philips took up the mantle of Billy the Kid and his regulators for 1988’s YOUNG GUNS. Their new blood helped energize a genre that was rapidly gathering tumbleweeds, the charismatic cast’s rock and roll energy blasting onto the screen with a memorable electric guitar theme by Anthony Marianelli (his score replacing a gunned-down James Horner’s). Where the rest of Marianelli’s effective synth-based score took a relatively subtle approach to the action, Alan Silvestri would bring his pistols packing […]Read On »
