CD Review: THE DEVIL’S HAND soundtrack

THE DEVIL'S HAND soundtrack | ©2015 Movie Score Media

There’s nothing creepier than black-garbed, bible quoting religious cultists dwelling in the rural hinterlands, as the genre of pseudo-Amish horror has proven with such brethren as DEADLY BLESSING and infinite entries of the CHILDREN OF THE CORN series. But when you’ve got an assortment of string and percussion instruments ripping your spinal chord out with the finesse of a rusty wood chipper, then that congregant’s screaming, shivering voice achieves a whole other level of musical fright. On that note, Anton Sanko’s score for  THE DEVIL’S HAND can be welcomed as the most insidious member of a musical congregation that includes […]Read On »

CD Review: OUIJA and JESSABELLE soundtracks

OUIJA soundtrack | ©2014 Back Lot Music

Anton Sanko has certainly come a long way in scoring horror films since the days of “Strangeland,” employing the off-kilter vibe of such dramatic indie scores as SCOTLAND, PA., LIFE IN FLIGHT and RABBIT HOLE to the far weirder likes of LAST WINTER and an episode a piece for FEAR ITSELF and MASTERS OF HORROR. In the process, Sanko has impressed by evolving from cool, sampled quirk to fully commanding darkly emotional orchestral forces for THE POSSESSION and THE DEVIL’S HAND, a talent that only becomes more uncannily formidable with the ghostly assaults of OUIJA and JESSABELLE. While the first […]Read On »

CD Revew: The Best Score Runner-Ups and Composers to Watch for 2012

CHICO & RITA soundtrack | ©2012 Red General Catalogue

The Best Score Runner-Ups and Composer to Watch for 2012 ARBITRAGE (Cliff Martinez / Milan) As the composer who virtually created the ethereal indie sound with SEX LIES AND VIDEOTAPE, Cliff Martinez has always played psychological tension in offbeat, ethereally percussive ways. Here’s it’s a moody spider’s web of drones and percussion that’s closing in on a magnate’s gigantic F-up, rhythmic tension that’s all about the inner turmoil that clings to the antihero as he uses all of his charms to clean things up. Speaking with his soft, haunted confidence, Martinez’s Eno-ish washes of melodic textures always have a cold […]Read On »

Interview: THE POSSESSION composer Anton Sanko finds a new sound for exorcism

THE POSSESSION soundtrack | ©2012 Lionsgate Records

When the word “exorcism” is bandied about, the movie-consecrated sights and sounds that seize us are usually comprised of tubular bells, bloodied crucifixes, shrieking dissonance, the shock of grotesquely wrenched bodies, feverish violins and the tormented cries of pubescent girls and their distraught parents. And while THE POSSESSION might have just a few of these stocks in horror trade, what impresses is the leap of faith it’s taken with the same old song and spew- that being of the demon’s transference to the Jewish religion, as trapped inside a “Dybbuk Box” (which once served as the film’s original title). Found […]Read On »
