CD Review: DARK SHADOWS soundtrack

DARK SHADOWS soundtrack | ©2012 WaterTower Music

Of all the great, Gothic love affairs that have been artistically going on in the cinema, easily the most enjoyable, and enduring partnership belongs to composer Danny Elfman and filmmaker Tim Burton. Birds of a bizarre feather from Elfman’s joyously demonic rock band Oingo Boingo to Burton’s twisted scribblings for a Disney, it was fate that these kindred, oddball spirits would immediately hit it off from the clown hell that tormented Pee Wee Herman’s BIG ADVENTURE in 1985. The Burton / Elfman a circus of audio-visual horrors that would mostly grow increasingly frenetic through the likes of BEETLEJUICE, BATMAN RETURNS, […]Read On »

I thought following on the heels of last week’s episode of MAD MEN, that there would be a HUGE finale that would leave fans reeling, but honestly it felt more like a normal episode with not a lot of huge revelations taking place. “The Phantom” just seems like it […]Read On »

The Top Ten WOW Moments of MAD MEN Season Five

MAD MEN poster - Season 5 | ©2012 AMC

The fifth season of MAD MEN has been interesting. There have been lots of changes and losses and even some gains. The series still manages to keep me completely entertained and ready for the next episode as soon as the current one is ending. Since there have been so many random WOW moments this season (and the finale hits Sunday night), ASSIGNMENT X decided it was time to look back at the best (and in some cases most disturbing moments) of Season 5. 10. Megan gets a musical introduction Making sure to show that Megan (Jessica Pare) is not just […]Read On »

Just when you think things couldn’t go darker in the offices of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, we have “Commissions and Fees”. There is only one episode left of the season and I really have absolutely NO idea […]Read On »

Interview: MAD MEN star Elisabeth Moss on Peggy and Season 5

Elisabeth Moss in MAD MEN - Season 5 | ©2012 AMC/Frank Ockenfels

AMC’s series MAD MEN, now in its fifth season Sundays at 9 PM, has some things in common with its character Peggy Olson, played by Elisabeth Moss. When MAD MEN, created by Matthew Weiner, began its run in 2007, no one knew that it would turn out to be an award-winning juggernaut. Likewise, when Moss’ Peggy joined the Madison Avenue advertising firm then known as Sterling-Cooper in 1960, no one foresaw that she would become the company’s first female copywriter and one of the strongest people there. Moss has been nominated for the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series three […]Read On »

TV Review: MAD MEN – Season 5 – “Christmas Waltz”

Jessica Pare and Jon Hamm in MAD MEN - Season 5 - "Christmas Waltz" | ©2012 AMC/Jordin Althaus

Stars: John Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks, Jared Harris, John Slattery, January Jones, Jessica Pare, Robert Morse, Aaron Staton, Rich Sommer, Kiernan Shipka Writer: Victor Levin & Matthew Wiener, Series created by Matthew Wiener Director: Michael Uppendahl       Network: AMC, airs Sunday nights Original Telecast: May 20, 2012 “Christmas Waltz” is such an odd episode of MAD MEN to me. It feels like little bits and pieces of various characters’ stories without any kind of a central through line to tie them together as well as some episodes in the past. There are so many significant moments in this […]Read On »

TV Review: MAD MEN – Season 5 – “Dark Shadows”

January Jones in MAD MEN - Season 5 - "Dark Shadows" | ©2012 AMC/Jodrin Althaus

Stars: John Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks, Jared Harris, John Slattery, January Jones, Jessica Pare, Robert Morse, Aaron Staton, Rich Sommer, Kiernan Shipka Writer: Erin Levy, Series created by Matthew Wiener Director: Scott Hornbacher      Network: AMC, airs Sunday nights Original Telecast: May 13, 2012 “Dark Shadows” is an interesting episode of MAD MEN since, in a way, it revolves around Betty (January Jones). Betty has had a long journey from being the innocent wife that most of us felt sorry for in the first season of the series. Her character was perfectly justified in wanting a divorce from […]Read On »
