Rating: PG-13 Stars: Tobey Maguire, Liev Schreiber, Michael Stuhlbarg, Peter Sarsgaard, Lily Rabe, Robin Weigert Writer: Steven Knight, story by Stephen J. Rivele & Christopher Wilkinson and Steven Knight Director: Edward Zwick Distributor: Bleecker Street Media Release Date: September 16, 2015 Chess is not an inherently cinematic game. Couple it with a main character who is actively unlikable, and it sounds like the makings of a movie that is at best hard to watch. Yet PAWN SACRIFICE turns out to be immersive. Directed by Edward Zwick and scripted by Steven Knight from a story by Stephen J. Rivele & Christopher […]Read On »

Rating: R Stars: Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo, Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller Writers: E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman Director: Bennett Miller Distributor: Sony Pictures Classics Release Date: November 14, 2014 FOXCATCHER is a disturbing film, and not only because of the true-life events it depicts, though those are certainly unnerving and dismaying. Director Bennett Miller, working from a screenplay by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman, creates an atmosphere of unhappiness and shame that works as an emotional fog. Killer cubs, hipsters, physicists and more constitute the good movies that fell short of great at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. PART 2: THE WARM WHILE WE’RE YOUNG Film festival favorite Noah Baumbach is admittedly an acquired taste (think Waspy Woody Allen), but there is no denying he gets some of the best work out of Ben Stiller. Four years ago they worked well in GREENBERG, this time it’s a tale of aging hipsters (Stiller and Naomi Watts) getting a young couple (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried) to show them how to be relevant again. Funny, poignant and somewhat […]Read On »

The results were decidedly mixed. As in […]Read On »
