Highlights from the 2016 LA FILM FESTIVAL

1) The new venue. Once upon a time the LAFF was in Hollywood. The it was in Westwood next to the UCLA campus. Then it was in the LA LIVE center downtown. All three areas managed to dwarf what was going on around it. In Hollywood it didn’t stick out enough from usual Hollywood goings on. At UCLA film goers were over run by campus dwellers (even though it was during Summer break). At LA LIVE it looked like it had been dropped into some Blade Runner-esque hybrid of LA and Tokyo with some sports championship or pop concert running […]Read On »

POP SHOW PODCAST – Episode 23: GAME OF THRONES mid-season review

POP SHOW PODCAST | © 2016 AssignmentX

There was a bit of a production snafu in this episode of the POP SHOW PODCAST starring Anthony C. Ferrante, which resulted in the loss of some takes on pop culture forever being lost in the ether of the universe. This was mostly Anthony going off on various tangents. So if you enjoy that portion of our podcast, we apologize that you’ll never get to hear it. If you don’t like that portion of our podcast, well congratulations you won’t hear it either. Luckily (Hodor), we do have a really good discussion about GAME OF THRONES (Hodor!) that has already had […]Read On »

CD Review: THE INVITATION soundtrack

THE INVITATION soundtrack | ©2016 Lakeshore Records

A truly versatile composer when not superbly cranking out comedy scores like SPY, ZOOLANDER 2 and the forthcoming GHOSTBUSTERS reboot, Theodore Shapiro has shown an inventive affinity for typewriter-clicking drama with TRUMBO and creepily ethereal horror when ogling JENNIFER’S BODY. But it’s with THE INVITATION that Shapiro proves like never before just how unfunny he can be upon entering a suicide cult’s dinner party, as staged by JENNIFER director Karyn Kusma. Given a bloody desert as served by hosts straight out Heaven’s Gate, Shapiro’s weapon of choice is a single, overdubbed violin to further ratchet the tension. Where string playing of this sort is usually […]Read On »

Trailer Park: CAPTAIN AMERICA CIVIL WAR, GHOSTBUSTERS And More

CAPTAIN AMERICA CIVIL WAR | © 2016 Disney

I’m busy. You’re busy. We’re all busy. We work. We have hobbies. We have pets, spouses and/or kids. We have obligations and responsibilities. We have stuff to do. We can’t see all the movies we want to see. Who has time to see every movie? Movie critics. I mean, that’s their job, right? The rest of us have other, less cool jobs that don’t involve getting to see all the movies. But, we can make some time to watch a few movie trailers. They are short, and you get the gist of the movie. That’s good enough. You see what […]Read On »

Welcome back to the POP SHOW PODCAST starring Anthony C. Ferrante. No Anthony again this week because as you might have heard he’s off directing the latest installment of SyFy’s SHARKNADO franchise. This week we dive deep into the remakes, reboots and re-imaginings (is that even a word?) world of Hollywood beginning with the big reveal of the GHOSTBUSTERS trailer. The gang also […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: Annie Potts on THE MUSIC TEACHER for the Hallmark Channel

Annie Potts in THE MUSIC TEACHER | ©2012 Hallmark Channel

High school musicals remain pretty popular both in the real world and on the large and small screens. Now Hallmark Channel is getting into the act, so to speak, with THE MUSIC TEACHER, which premieres Saturday, Aug. 1, at 9 PM. Annie Potts plays the title character, whose former students rally round her when her school program is threatened with closure. It’s easy to understand why people would come to Potts’ defense. The Kentucky-born actress has been charming audiences since she appeared opposite Mark Hamill at the height of his STAR WARS fame in 1978’s CORVETTE SUMMER. Potts also starred […]Read On »

The Dork Side: Movie Quotables for Everyday Life

STAR WARS - original movie poster |©LucasFilm

“It’s a trap!” “I have a strange feeling about this.” “Never tell me the odds.” “Search your feelings, you know it to be true!” “All too easy.” “But I was going into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters!” I think half of the things I say on a daily basis are from a STAR WARS movie. Recently, some cool bloggers in my town wrote about movie quotes that have worked themselves into their everyday lives. I repeat a lot of movie quotes throughout the day. For example, “I am Jack’s complete lack of surprise” from THE FIGHT CLUB. […]Read On »
