Movie Review: END OF WATCH

Rating: R Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna Kendrick, America Ferrara, Cody Horn, Natalie Martinez, Frank Grillo Writer: David Ayer Director: David Ayer Distributor: Open Road Films Release Date: September 21, 2012 END OF WATCH is an entertaining, mostly solid buddy cop drama. Director/writer David Ayer for some reason has elected to show the bulk of it through video cameras – both the police and the criminals have them – which doesn’t seem to serve any purpose. In horror movies, this format can allow for a particular type of tension and storytelling, but here, everything could just as easily (and […]Read On »

ASSIGNMENT X: The Shakespeare readings at Joss Whedon’s house have been talked about for years.  Were you already part of that group, or did MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING kind of come out of the blue for you? Christopher McDonald in HARRY'S LAW - Season 2 | ©2011 NBC/John Russo

NBC’s David E. Kelley-created HARRY’S LAW is a midwinter hit that’s back for its second season Wednesdays at 9 PM. Kathy Bates plays Harry Korn, a lawyer who turned her back on a lucrative career in patent law to open her own unorthodox legal practice. Christopher McDonald, the prolific New York-born actor, came aboard as lawyer Tommy Jefferson for what was supposed to be a one-shot role on HARRY’S LAW. The character worked out so well that McDonald is now a series regular. Meanwhile, McDonald is also appearing in his second season of HBO’s Prohibition-era drama BOARDWALK EMPIRE, Sundays at […]Read On »

Movie Review: SOURCE CODE

SOURCE CODE movie poster | ©2011 Summit Entertainment

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright Writer: Ben Ripley Director: Duncan Jones Distributor: Summit Entertainment Release Date: April 1, 2011 SOURCE CODE is one of those movies with a TERMINATOR-like time paradox that causes audiences to leave the theater with furrowed brows. However, the movie comes by its twists honestly, paying off the things it sets up and vice-versa, so that everything is neatly and briskly addressed. Better, director Duncan Jones and writer Ben Ripley let us understand early on what’s happening but keep us guessing throughout as to exactly where this is going and […]Read On »

In the new romantic dramedy LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS (which opened nationwide this week), Anne Hathaway plays a young woman with Parkinson’s who strikes up an awkward new relationship with a drug salesman played by Jake Gyllenhaal. She’s initially cautious about putting her feelings out there, particularly with her disease, but the end result is a film that redefines the romantic comedy genre. And with director and co-writer Ed Zwick pushing the boundaries of nudity between the two leads in a film, it certainly gives Hathaway a bunch of things to talk about as she takes five with ASSIGNMENT X. Movie Review: LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS

LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS movie poster | © 2010 20th Century Fox

There’s a telling movie to be made about the pharmaceutical drug trade in the U.S. (and elsewhere), but LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS isn’t it. This wouldn’t be a problem if LOVE wasn’t aspiring to be that movie, while simultaneously putting romance front and center.
