Movie Review: WHITE HOUSE DOWN

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Woods, Jason Clarke, Richard Jenkins, Joey King Writer: James Vanderbilt Director: Roland Emmerich Distributor: Columbia Pictures Release Date: June 27, 2013 It’s easy to like WHITE HOUSE DOWN, even as we acknowledge that it seems awfully unlikely. Granted, the U.S. government can be dysfunctional, but it doesn’t usually have the kinds of lapses that would lead to a cadre of mixed mercenaries and ideologues invading1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, armed with actual weapons rather than words. Part of the film deals with uncovering the question of who these people are and what […]Read On »

Rating: R Stars: Jamie Foxx, Christophe Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson Writer: Quentin Tarantino Director: Quentin Tarantino Distributor: Columbia Pictures/The Weinstein Company Release Date: Dec. 25, 2012 If you’re old enough to remember crazy indie ‘70s Westerns, or at least have seen them on video or at revival houses, you understand the kind of movie experience writer/director Quentin Tarantino is addressing with DJANGO UNCHAINED. As with everything Tarantino does, there’s a sense of film history/film commentary, as if a friend is sitting next to you saying, “Remember this movie? Remember this moment in this movie? Wouldn’t it […]Read On »

TV Review: SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE – Season 38 – Host Martin Short

Martin Short and Paul McCartney in SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE - Season 38 | ©2012 NBC/Dana Edelson

After a very rough patch of episodes, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE pulled out all the stops for its Christmas episode hosted by Martin Short with musical guest Paul McCartney. Following on the heels of the tragedy in the Sandy Hook elementary shooting, SNL made the cold opening a very classy and understated moment – they had the New York Children’s Choir sing “Silent Night”. No mention was made of the tragedy, but it was clear what this moment stood for. Very memorable. The rest of the episode was filled with an endless parade of big name cameos (Samuel L. Jackson, Alec […]Read On »

Stars: Fred Armisen, Vanessa Bayer, Bill Hader, Taran Killam, Seth Meyers, Bobby Moynihan, Nasim Pedrad, Jay Pharoah, Jason Sudeikis, Kenan Thompson, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, Tim Robinson, Cecily Strong Network: NBC, airs Saturday nights Original Telecast: December 8, 2012 SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE returns after a three-week hiatus, and the time away still hasn’t made the show any sharper or any funnier. Season 38 has turned into one of the worst seasons in some time and I still haven’t figured out why. Kristen Wiig and Andy Samburg leaving should not have killed the show’s momentum. They were good, but they weren’t […]Read On »

Movie Review: DUE DATE

When two teams of writers work on a project, it’s generally not good news. Such is the case with DUE DATE, a road trip comedy blessed with the intense, intelligent presence of Robert Downey, Jr. and Zack Galifianakis as mismatched travelers, but lacking hilarity in either premise or details.
