Blu-ray Review: INTO THE NIGHT – Collector’s Edition

INTO THE NIGHT Blu-ray Collector's Edition | INTO THE NIGHT movie poster | ©2017 Shout Factory

Stars: Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Pfeiffer, Richard Farnsworth, Irene Papas, Kathryn Harrold Writer: Ron Koslow Director: John Landis Distributor: Shout! Factory Suggested Retail Price: $27.99 While you may know John Landis from his successful comedies (ANIMAL HOUSE, THE BLUES BROTHERS, TRADING PLACES) or his horror efforts (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, Michael Jackson’s THRILLER video), many of his projects  that fall in between are worth a second look. While I was never a fan of his 1992 vampire film INNOCENT BLOOD, its recent release on Blu-ray (and taken for what it is, which is a vampire crime thriller) has aged rather […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: Vincent Paterson on Michael Jackson’s THRILLER and THE ’80S: THE DECADE THAT MADE US

THE '80s - THE DECADE THAT MADE US

Even people who weren’t alive during the Eighties are familiar with the cultural icon that is MICHAEL JACKSON’S THRILLER, not only the song, but the music video with its oft-recreated zombie dance. National Geographic Channel features THRILLER in its new documentary series THE ‘80S: THE DECADE THAT MADE US. One of the subjects of the documentary is Vincent Paterson, the assistant choreographer on THRILLER who has gone on to work as a director/choreographer with music stars in a variety of genres. Paterson gave Assignment X an exclusive interview on his thoughts on the decade that made THRILLER. ASSIGNMENT X: There […]Read On »

CD Review: THREE AMIGOS! soundtrack

THREE AMIGOS! soundtrack | ©2013 Perseverance Records

Credit longtime Elmer Bernstein fan (and family friend) John Landis as the guy who thought the composer’s important orchestral style could be applied to hilarious ends by being played straight in ANIMAL HOUSE. It was a film that made Bernstein an inadvertent king of comedy by unwinkingly using his old-school sound for the likes of AIRPLANE! STRIPES and GHOSTBUSTERS. So it was natural that Landis would call on Bernstein to inadvertently spoof the Oscar-nominated western sound of TRUE GRIT and THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN for three not-so magnificent silent movie stars fooled into becoming real heroes in 1986’s THREE AMIGOS!  Bernstein’s […]Read On »

Unfortunately, the next thing that must be said is that discussing specifics about what makes it so awesome is liable to dampen the experience for those seeing it for the first time. The good news is that it holds up just great on […]Read On »

CD Review: TRADING PLACES soundtrack (2,000 edition)

TRADING PLACES soundtrack | ©2011 La La Land Records

An old fogey named Elmer Bernstein became the new (and perhaps unwitting) king of youth comedy scores when filmmaker John Landis had the idea that the composer’s straight-laced, old Hollywood approach would be ideal to play the classically pompous academia who did their best to make sure Faber College had no fun of any kind. The keg smash of 1978’s ANIMAL HOUSE made Bernstein into The Man in more ways than one, tuning his often brassy approach to the height of wealth-spoofing irony- an approach that would pay huge dividends for both men ten years later with TRADING PLACES. Of […]Read On »
