RED DAWN movie poster | ©2012 FilmDistrict

Rating: PG-13 Stars: Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Isabel Lucas, Connor Cruise, Jeffrey Dean Morgan Writers: Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore, based on the screenplay by Kevin Reynolds and John Milius, story by Kevin Reynolds Director: Dan Bradley Distributor: FilmDistrict Release Date: November 21, 2012 Whether you remember director John Milius’ 1984 RED DAWN as a bona fide classic, a camp entertainment or a WTF bit of paramilitary fantasy, the new remake stands up poorly. Movie Review: DETENTION

DETENTION movie poster | ©2012 Samuel Goldwyn

Stars: Josh Hutcherson, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Dane Cook, Parker Bagley Writers: Joseph Kahn and Mark Palermo Director: Joseph Kahn Distributor: Samuel Goldwyn Release Date: April 13, 2012 DETENTION is being sold as tongue-in-cheek horror, a la SCREAM. It actually is closer to full-blown parody, with a multitude of filmic targets from the Eighties and Nineties. It is unclear who exactly this is made for, because the people who grew up with the movies referenced here have now seen other parodies, while modern real-life high school students tend to have more recent pop culture frames of reference. As to the […]Read On »

Recently, Lionsgate held the World Premiere of THE HUNGER GAMES at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Downtown Los Angeles. This premiere had the same setup as THE TWILIGHT SAGA premieres that have been held down at Nokia…BIG is the word to describe it. Fans of the book series by Suzanne Collins were everywhere. They screamed as the stars arrived. Some wanted autographs and their photo taken with the stars. Seen walking the black carpet were the stars of the movie, which included: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Wes Bentley, Toby […]Read On »

The Great HUNGER GAMES Rip-Off

Jennifer Lawrence in THE HUNGER GAMES | ©2012 Lionsgate

They say that there are only seven stories, aka plots, and that every story we’ve ever read, heard, or seen in a film, is either one of those seven, or a combination of one or more of them. Proof of this was recently hammered home in a big way via the AVATAR/POCAHONTAS/FERNGULLY debacle. While I’m a big fan of mash-ups, aka taking elements of several existing stories, lyrics, or melodies, and making them into one new-ish one, I do find it odd that with all the hoopla surrounding this season’s darling, THE HUNGER GAMES – no one seems to remember […]Read On »

As to how well the HUNGER GAMES movie stands up on its own, it is a good […]Read On »

The X List: Assignment X’s Best of 2010 – Movies

TRUE GRIT poster | ©2010 Paramount Pictures

The best films of 2010, in the opinion of this reviewer (who still has to catch up with THE FIGHTER, WINTER’S BONE and several other acclaimed releases): THE SOCIAL NETWORK Normally, people working with computers is one of the most boring things that can be put on screen. Director David Fincher, writer Aaron Sorkin and an across-the-board brilliant cast headed up by Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake leave the computers in the background and illustrate the dynamics of friendship and ambition in a way that is remarkably compelling and universal. The fact that the film is about the […]Read On »
