DVD Review: THE INHERITANCE

THE INHERITANCE | ©2011 Image Entertainment

Rating: Unrated Stars: Golden Brooks, D.B. Woodside, Keith David, Rochelle Aytes, Darrin Dewitt Henson, Andre De Shields, Lanre Idewu Writer: Robert O’Hara Director: Robert O’Hara Distributor: Image Entertainment Release Date: April 12, 2011 On a horror level, THE INHERITANCE is okay if unexceptional – characters who are a bit slow on the uptake get into more and more dire straits. On a meta level, though, the movie is perhaps weirder than it intends to be. With its prologue and mythology set in the pre-Civil War South, THE INHERITANCE manages to suggest that actual evil was involved in ending slavery, not […]Read On »

TV Review: THE CAPE – Season 1 – “Razer” – Series Finale

Summer Glau in THE CAPE | ©2011 NBC

Stars: David Lyons, Keith David, Summer Glau, James Frain, Jennifer Ferrin, Ryan Wynott, Vinnie Jones, Martin Klebba, Izabella Miko, Anil Kumar, Elliott Gould, Grant Bowler Writers: Tom Wheeler & William Wheeler Director: David Straiton Network: NBC, Mondays @ 9 PM Airdate: February 28, 2011 It’s impossible to blame the makers of THE CAPE for the distinctly not-final feel of the series finale, “Razer” (spelling is correct). They weren’t expecting their order to get cut from thirteen to ten, let alone having the aired order pared down to nine. As a result, “Razer” sets up some major questions that creator Tom […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: THE CAPE star Vinnie Jones sheds his skin

Vinnie Jones in THE CAPE - Season 1 | ©2011 NBC

In NBC’s THE CAPE, which has its finale tonight at 9 PM, the masked but non-superpowered hero must contend with several villains including Scales. What dock boss Dominic Raoul, aka Scales, may lack in social manipulation skills, he makes up for in sheer toughness (and has somewhat reptilian skin to go with the nickname). When the character is meant to be immediately intimidating, it helps to cast an actor like Vinnie Jones, the English former footballer turned actor who has played a lot of gritty types in films like his debut, LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS, SNATCH, X-MEN: THE […]Read On »

David Lyons in THE CAPE - Season 1 - "Dice" | ©2011 NBC/Trae Patton

NBC’s THE CAPE airs its final episode tonight, Feb. 28 at 9 PM as it follows framed Palm City police officer Vince Farraday, played by David Lyons. In order to clear his name and get back to his wife and young son, Faraday must clean up his hometown by assuming the identity of comic book superhero the Cape. Alas, the series didn’t bring in the kinds of ratings that would allow it to remain in its competitive Monday night slot. However, THE CAPE’s creator Tom Wheeler is happy to share the series’ origin story with us. [Editor’s Note: This interview […]Read On »

TV Review: THE CAPE – Season 1 – “The Lich Pt. 2”

Keith David in THE CAPE - Season 1 | ©2011 NBC

Stars: David Lyons, Keith David, Summer Glau, James Frain, Jennifer Ferrin, Ryan Wynott, Dorian Missick, Martin Klebba, Tom Noonan, Glenn Fitzgerald, Ileana Douglas Writers: Toni Graphia & Robbie Thompson Director: Roxann Dawson Network: NBC, Mondays @ 9 PM Airdate: February 21, 2011 In the first episode of THE CAPE’s two-parter “The Lich,” the creative team tried a bit too hard for Thirties-style creepiness and wound up with something that didn’t quite work. In the second half, writers Toni Graphia & Robbie Thompson and director Roxann Dawson go instead for ALICE IN WONDERLAND-esque trippiness, with better results. The trippiness is mostly […]Read On »

TV Review: THE CAPE – SEASON ONE – “The Lich Pt. 1”

David Lyons in THE CAPE - Season 1 | ©2011 NBC

Stars: David Lyons, Keith David, Summer Glau, James Frain, Jennifer Ferrin, Ryan Wynott, Dorian Missick, Martin Klebba, Tom Noonan, Anil Kumar, Glenn Fitzgerald, Richard Schiff Writer: William Wheeler Director: Karen Gaviola Network: NBC, Mondays @ 9 PM Airdate: February 14, 2011 THE CAPE generally does a good job of maintaining a sense of comic book integrity, balancing the genre’s conventions without tipping over into things that don’t work. However, in “The Lich Pt. 1,” a cliffhanger that will resolve next week, the attempt to do Fifties-style horror falls short. The reason for this is that unless the viewer hasn’t checked […]Read On »

TV Review: THE CAPE – Season 1 – “Goggles and Hicks”

David Lyons in THE CAPE - Season 1 | ©2011 NBC

Stars: David Lyons, Keith David, Summer Glau, James Frain, Jennifer Ferrin, Ryan Wynott, Vinnie Jones, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Chad Lindberg, Izabella Miko Writer: Craig Titley Director: Deran Serafian Network: NBC, Mondays @ 9 PM Airdate: February 7, 2011 THE CAPE usually has well-structured episodes that have multiple levels and good payoffs, but while “Goggles and Hicks” has a fine guest actor in Pruitt Taylor Vince – and a nicely scary turn from Chad Lindberg as his partner/brother – it feels a bit haphazard overall. A prologue shows us how adept hit men Goggles (Vince) and Hicks (Lindberg) are at their […]Read On »
