Rating: PG-13 Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Kevin Spacey, Sarah Paulson, Victor Garber, Hope Davis Writer: Danny Strong, inspired by the book J.D. SALINGER: A LIFE by Kenneth Slawenski Director: Danny Strong Distributor: IFC Release Date: September 8, 2017  Writing is a solitary activity that, unlike some others (bicycling, mountain climbing, even painting), is extremely difficult to make watchable. In bringing the early life of CATCHER IN THE RYE author J.D. Salinger to the screen, REBEL IN THE RYE writer/director Danny Strong deftly surmounts the challenges of the subject matter. Inspired by Kenny Slawenski’s biography J.D. SALINGER: A LIFE, Strong gives us […]Read On »

Rating: R Stars: Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Hamm, Eiza Gonzalez, Jamie Foxx, CJ Jones, Jon Bernthal Writer: Edgar Wright Director: Edgar Wright Distributor: Sony/TriStar Release Date: June 28, 2017 BABY DRIVER has pretty much wall-to-wall music, and almost that much action to go with it. The tale of a very talented, reluctant young driver (Ansel Elgort) working for a crime boss, BABY DRIVER plays like a friendlier version of a Quentin Tarantino movie with more car chases and fewer words. The driver, who calls himself Baby, almost immediately gets a chance to show his stuff, chauffeuring three […]Read On »

Goldstein & John Francis Daley and Sean Anders & John Morris, characters created by Michael Markowitz Director: Sean Anders Distributor: Warner Bros. Release Date: November 26, 2014 2011’s HORRIBLE BOSSES was a pretty funny if not always on-target riff on STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. Movie Review: CASINO JACK

CASINO JACK movie poster | ©2010 ATO

Sometimes, you just can’t make this stuff up. Most Americans have heard of Jack Abramoff, if only because he wound up going to jail. Exactly what he did to land in prison is addressed in CASINO JACK, a pitch-black comedy of greed, crime, politics and the intersection of all three.
