In TOUCH, the series created by Tim King which has its first-season two-hour finale tonight on Fox, Kiefer Sutherland (who is also one of the show’s producers, plays Martin Baum, the father of eleven-year-old Jake (David Mazouz), an extraordinarily gifted child who does not speak and cannot bear to be touched. However, Jake sees crucial connections between seemingly unrelated events. Most actors get roles and then research their characters. In a serendipitous twist that echoes the themes of inevitable outcomes arising from apparent random happenstance, actor Bodhi Elfman researched his character before he even knew the series TOUCH existed, much […]Read On »

TV Review: TOUCH – Season 1 – “Noosphere Rising”

Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) finds Teller's mysterious workshop in the Noosphere Rising" on Fox's TOUCH | (c) 2012 Isabella Vosmikova/FOX

Stars: Kiefer Sutherland, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Mazouz, Danny Glover Writer: Tim Kring & Carol Barbee Director: Gwyneth Horder-Payton Network: Fox, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: April 26, 2012 One of the toughest challenges the writers of TOUCH must have is making sure all the different story lines intersect organically while all we viewers have to do is keep track of them. In “Noosphere Rising” the connections aren’t quite as clear, but here goes. On the main story front, Martin Baum (Kiefer Sutherland) is trying to make sense of Arthur Teller’s (Danny Glover) death, as is Clea (Gugu Mbatha-Raw). While going over the surveillance video of […]Read On »

TV Review: TOUCH – Season 2 – “Entanglement”

Stars: Kiefer Sutherland, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Mazouz, Danny Glover Writer: Chris Levinson Director: Milan Cheylov Network: Fox, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: April 12, 2012 One of the realities of TOUCH is that there’s generally a lot going on as the story paths weave and interchange. “Entanglement” may be this episode’s title, but it could just as easily have been the series title, as well. Martin Bohm (Kiefer Sutherland), who lost his wife when the World Trade Center came down during the 9/11 attacks, is trying to raise his autistic son Jake (David Mazouz) who can’t speak. The trick is that Jake “sees” and apparently “feels” […]Read On »

TV Review: TOUCH – Season 1 – “Safety In Numbers”

Stars: Kiefer Sutherland, David Mazouz, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Danny Glover Writer: Carol Barbee Director: Stephen Williams Network: Fox, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: March 30, 2012 Every time a show proves to be as good out of the gate as TOUCH, you almost fear that the inevitable downslide is coming. SMASH and ALCATRAZ are perfect examples of first season series that started off strong and faltered quickly. I’m hoping the bigger picture of TOUCH, since it has proven to be so focused, will be the exception to the rule. It appears it has a pretty detailed plan all mapped out in […]Read On »

In FX’s JUSTIFIED, now in its third season Tuesday nights at 10 PM and already renewed for a fourth, a lot of the residents of Harlan County, Kentucky seem to act like laws unto themselves. This is often true of protagonist U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, played by Timothy Olyphant, as well as a lot of his adversaries in the series, based on writer Elmore Leonard’s story “Fire in the Hole.” It is always true of the character Ellstin Limehouse, played by Mykelti (pronounced Michael T) Williamson. Limehouse, just introduced this season, rules the secluded Noble’s Holler with unquestioned authority. Noble’s […]Read On »

TV Review: TOUCH – Season 1 – “1+1=3”

Stars: Keifer Sutherland, David Mazouz, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Danny Glover Writer: Tim Kring Director: Ian Toynton Network: Fox, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: March 23, 2012 I was a big fan of the pilot presentation of TOUCH. It brought Kiefer Sutherland back to Fox after his long stint on 24, it had a compelling, positive story from HEROES creator Tim Kring and it proved that challenging, interesting and different storytelling does have a place on network television. However, delivering in a pilot and delivering on a week to week basis are two separate things. Thankfully, the official series premiere of TOUCH, […]Read On »

TV Review: TOUCH – Season 1 – “Pilot” – Season Premiere

Cast: Kiefer Sutherland, David Mazouz, Danny Glover, Gugu Mbatha-Raw Writer: Tim Kring Director: Francis Lawrence Network: Fox, airs Wednesdays @ 9 p.m. Original Telecast: Jan. 25, 2011 On the surface, Fox’s new drama TOUCH, seems like a RAIN MAN rip-off but just with a bratty kid and Jack Bauer (from 24), but it isn’t. Nor is it HEROES (as it is created by Tim Kring) with Jack Bauer as a superpowered killing machine – because that would just be too freaking awesome. This time Kiefer Sutherland isn’t running around yelling that “There’s no time!” or “Dammit!” (although he did say […]Read On »

Kiefer Sutherland in TOUCH - Season 1 | ©2012 Fox/Brian Bowen Smith

Fox’s new series TOUCH brings star Kiefer Sutherland back to the network after his eight seasons there as the iconic Jack Bauer on 24. Fighting terrorists is not in this show’s vocabulary – instead it’s a show that centers on a father and child, but has an unusual twist. Created by Tim King (HEROES), TOUCH  features Sutherland as widower Martin Bohm wants desperately to understand his eleven-year-old son Jake, played by David Mazouz, who speaks to the audience in voiceover, but has never communicated verbally with anyone in his entire life. As Martin discovers in the first episode, Jake is […]Read On »

This winter, Kiefer Sutherland returns to Fox network with the new genre series TOUCH playing Martin Bohm, a widowed father trying to communicate with his autistic 11-year old son (David Mazouz) who he discovers has the ability to discover unlikely numerical patterns that connect life on the planet. The show is created by Tim Kring (HEROES). While speaking at today’s FOX TCA press session, Sutherland spoke about jumping into the role of Bohm after wrapping up eight years of playing Jack Bauer on the Fox TV series 24. “[TOUCH] was unbelievably appealing, because it was so different, and I emotionally […]Read On »
