VICTORIA is airing its eight-episode first season Sunday nights on PBS’ MASTERPIECE, with a second season waiting in the wings. Jenna Coleman (of DOCTOR WHO) plays the nineteenth-century English monarch from before her ascension to the crown at age eighteen through the first years of her reign. Daisy Goodwin created the series, based on her meticulously researched book. (The writer also has a cameo as the Duchess of Inverness). POLDARK is back for its second season (and renewed for a third) Sunday nights on PBS. In period series based on Winston Graham’s novels, Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) has returned to his home in a village in Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War. Eleanor Tomlinson plays Demelza, the peasant girl that Poldark rescued and eventually married in Season 1. There seems to be something about Eleanor Tomlinson that makes people think of the past. The English actress has played some contemporary characters, but she’s often cast in period pieces, including her film debut THE ILLUSIONIST, followed by the features ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Victorian England) and JACK THE GIANT SLAYER (unspecified medieval England) and the miniseries DEATH COMES TO PEMBERLEY (Jane Austen’s England) and THE WHITE QUEEN (the War of the Roses). Not literally, of course, but the Irish actor played a vampire in the first three seasons of the original BBC BEING HUMAN, a werewolf in the film MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES and a dwarf in love with an elf in Peter Jackson’s cinematic THE HOBBIT trilogy. Exclusive Interview: Ioan Gruffudd gets the call for RINGER

In the CW’s new series RINGER, premiering tonight at 9 PM, Sarah Michelle Gellar (of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) makes her long-awaited return to TV in a dual role. Gellar plays both the devious, wealthy Siobhan and her twin sister, downtrodden prostitute Bridget, who winds up assuming Siobhan’s identity. Ioan Gruffudd  (pronounced YO-an GRUFF-uth) plays Siobhan’s husband Andrew, who has quite a few secrets of his own.
