CD Review: THE COUNSELOR soundtrack

THE COUNSELOR soundtrack | ©2013 Milan Records

After such impressive scores as the majestic haunting of THE AWAKENING and the entrancingly downbeat crime drama BLOOD, the prolific English composer Daniel Pemberton finally gets a major Hollywood score for fellow Brit Ridley Scott’s THE COUNSELOR. It’s a gig that lands Pemberton once again on the wrong side of the law, and south of the border as a suave legal eagle gets in way over his head in the Mexican drug business. But that doesn’t mean that Pemberton can’t have black-humored fun with the bloodshed at hand with a nice big helping of Spaghetti Western music. It’s an ironic, […]Read On »

Movie Review: THE COUNSELOR

THE COUNSELOR movie poster | ©2013 20th Century Fox

Rating: R Stars: Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt, Ruben Blades Writer: Cormac McCarthy Director: Ridley Scott Distributor: Twentieth Century Fox Release Date: October 25, 2013 Director Ridley Scott and writer Cormac McCarthy are masters of craft who should not be underestimated. However, their collaboration on THE COUNSELOR – erstwhile novelist McCarthy’s first screenplay – is not the finest work of either one. Although THE COUNSELOR has certain thematic qualities in common with NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, it lacks of that story’s poles, the ethical if ultimately ineffectual sheriff played by Tommy Lee Jones or […]Read On »

CD Review: BLADE RUNNER: 30th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION soundtrack

BLADE RUNNER: 30th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION soundtrack | ©2012 Buysoundtrax

If there was one score that made a generation rip their hair out in frustration, then it was Vangelis’ BLADE RUNNER. In 1982, there’s no doubt that hundreds of people went directly from theaters to the record stores in search of the Greek composer’s seminal synth future noir score, only to find a vinyl album performed by some group called The New American Orchestra instead of the promised Polydor original soundtrack. Needless to say, Vangelis’s lush and technically sophisticated work this was not. So one can understand fans’ reluctance when presented with a “30th Anniversary Celebration” produced by Buysoundtrax, a […]Read On »

Damon Lindelof hints what PROMETHEUS 2 could be

While speaking to a small group of press after the PROMETHEUS panel at Wondercon 2012, screenwriter and producer Damon Lindelof spoke a little bit more in detail about where a PROMETHEUS 2 could go. It also shed some light on why PROMETHEUS has the “DNA” of the ALIEN films, but isn’t a really a true prequel. “If ending this movie is going to take you to the room where John Hurt is walking into that room full of eggs, we know where it’s going to end,” says Lindelof and why they didn’t do that? “Real good stories, you don’t know […]Read On »

Movie Review: PROMETHEUS

PROMETHEUS movie poster | ©2012 20th Century Fox

Rating: R Stars: Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, Logan Marshall-Green, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall Writers: Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof Director: Ridley Scott Distributor: Twentieth Century Fox Release Date: June 8, 2012 Prior to PROMETHEUS, director Ridley Scott has, in his prolific career, made only two other science fiction films. However, those two films were ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER. It’s hard to imagine what current science fiction (and, in the case of ALIEN, creature horror) films would look like without those two seminal features in the canon, except to say that things would be different. Breaking News: Ridley Scott says PROMETHEUS sequels a possibility (Wondercon 2012)

PROMETHUS movie poster | ©2012 20th Century Fox

While speaking on the panel at Wondercon 2012 for PROMETHEUS, the thinly veiled ALIEN prequel, director Ridley Scott hinted that there will be more movies in his latest science-fiction opus if things go well with this one. “It’s been a long time since I’ve done science-fiction which doesn’t mean I wasn’t trying couldn’t come across anything that was of interest with me,” says Scott who says the description that this has “the DNA of ALIEN” is a perfectly good description.” Once Scott began to work with screenwriter Damon Lindelof, the original seed of an idea that Scott had developed for […]Read On »

SDCC 2011 News: Was EXPLOSION the alternate title to PROMETHEUS?

ALIEN movie poster | ©1979 20th Century Fox

While speaking to the press at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con, LOST co-creator Damon Lindelof spoke about scripting the new Ridley Scott directed film PROMETHEUS, which depending on who you speak to, is a thinly veiled prequel to Scott’s 1979 ALIEN. In coming up with a title, Lindelof says he wanted to come up with something “pretentious” like INTENTION. “PROMETHEUS makes the movie sound much smarter and much better than my original title EXPLOSION,” Lindelof says with a grin. Lindelof does go on to say that the title is very key into the story of the film, since Prometheus was […]Read On »

SDCC 2011 News: PROMETHEUS star Charlize Theron wishes she got into shape for the new sci-fi film

While Sigourney Weaver clearly has some big shoes to fill now that Ridley Scott is helming a loosely connected prequel to his 1979 classic ALIEN, casting Charlize Theron in the new film called PROMETHEUS surprisingly didn’t require the actress to get into shape. “I was going to do MAD MAX, so I started training for that for six months,” says Theron. “I would be lying if I said I was training for this.” Her character of Meredith Vickers is more business-like than kick-ass heroine, which got very interesting for the actress. “I’m the Suit,” she says. “I have a very […]Read On »
