At today’s TCA session for PBS, director Peter Jones spoke about his work on the new AMERICAN MASTERS special – JOHNNY CARSON: KING OF LATE NIGHT. This project, set to air in May 14, celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Johnny Carson taking over THE TONIGHT SHOW from Jack Paar and changing the face of late night forever. A private person, Jones admits that Carson didn’t really want to participate in a documentary on his life – at least in his lifetime. And after 12 years of writing to him, he finally got a call from the talk show host in […]Read On »

THE DUST BOWL documentary by Ken Burns | ©2012 PBS

During the Winter 2012 TCAs this week, PBS revealed that Ken Burns will be a big part of their programming for years to come. “I refer to it as our ‘marriage contract’ otherwise known as ‘’till death do us part,’” says PBS CEO and President Paula Kerger. “We have a long-term relationship with him which we created because so many of the projects that he works on are large and epic,” says Kerger. Upcoming projects include THE DUST BOWL, set to air in the Fall. “It’s going to be an extraordinarily powerful series because he was able to record a […]Read On »

TCA News: PBS talks about Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney calling for end to federal funding of the broadcaster

NO APOLOGY by Mitt Romney | ©Mitt Romney

At PBS’s winter TCA press tour, the broadcaster’s President and CEO Paula Kerger responded to potential Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s call to end Federal funding and suggesting PBS start running ads. Kerger says that it’s wonderful that Romney says he likes public broadcasting, she did note that the Federal investment is rather minimal when you break it all down. “We try to leverage it very carefully and it amounts to about $1.35 a person per year,” says Kerger. “We have always had bipartisan support, and I know that this is a period in our country’s history where, as a […]Read On »

TCA News: Is PBS becoming the new HBO with quality hits like DOWNTON ABBEY?

PBS kicked off the Winter 2012 Television Critics Association this week with its executive session with President and CEO Paula Kerger. One of the talking points was a recent story in the New York Times that said PBS is giving the premium channels like HBO and Showtime a run for their money – especially with the success of such quality programming as DOWNTON ABBEY. “It’s funny how may people have said to me, ‘oh, PBS looks cool again,’” admits Kerger. “I’ve always thought PBS was cool, but that’s just my opinion. I think what we’re trying to do … is […]Read On »

THE X FACTOR Season 1 Recap: Nothing to Crow about as Rachel Crow gets her heart ripped out by Nicole Scherzinger

Rachel Crow (pictured here with host Steve Jones) is eliminated from THE X FACTOR - Season 1 - Top 5 week | ©2011 Fox/Ray Mickshaw

Network: Fox Original Telecast: November 30, 2011 Here’s the problem with having 13, 14, or 15 year olds competing on reality programs – they’re not mature enough and emotionally not ready to take on the big hurdles these kind of shows present. And THE X FACTOR has proven all season, its youngest contestants may be talented, but to be thrust into the dog eat dog world of the entertainment industry is a dangerous, slippery slope. First, we had the arrogance of Astro refusing to perform when he was in the bottom one week. Last week, the judges unfairly ousted Drew […]Read On »

TV Review: THE X FACTOR – Season 1 – “The Top 5 Perform” Recap

Chris Rene in THE X FACTOR - Season 1 - "The Top 5 Perform" | ©2011 Fox/Ray Mickshaw

Network: Fox Original Telecast: December 7, 2011 THE X FACTOR is down to the Final Five, and I’m so bored with the remaining contestants, going into the latest episode, I was prepared to be bored to tears. After Drew got the boot last week (my fave singer), the five remaining have a lot to prove. Usually I list the judges comments, but it doesn’t matter what they really say tonight. Last week they proved they’re in it for themselves – not for voting for who is most deserving. Yet, even more so, what is necessary now, is to determine and […]Read On »

THE X FACTOR Season 1 Recap: Astro beats it, and sadly, Drew does too

Drew (next to her mentor Simon Cowell) is eliminated on THE X FACTOR - Season 1 - "The Top 7 elimination" | ©2011 Fox/Ray Mickshaw

Network: Fox Original Telecast: November 30, 2011 THE X FACTOR did its second week of double eliminations during “The Top 7 Perform – Michael Jackson Tribute Week,” with one person who you expected to be booted off and another who was a complete surprise. The four people that made it through easily – Chris Rene, Melanie Amaro, Josh Krajcik, Rachel Crow. Then, came the automatic booting off of Astro. It was finally his time and surprisingly he was grateful, even as he was ushered off the stage (a complete about face from his attitude two weeks ago). This left Marcus […]Read On »
