Interview: Composer Andrew Hewitt hears THE DOUBLE

Where Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky’s work might be better known among mainstream moviegoers for history-drenched adaptations of “The Brothers Karamazov” and “Crime and Punishment,” it’s likely that viewers might mistake the new cinematic translation of  THE DOUBLE as coming from the pen of Franz Kafka, another pessimism-drenched writer whose characters dealt with oppressive bureaucracies and mind-numbing daily drudgery. It’s a screaming shadow that’s certainly influenced Hollywood when throwing pathetic everyman heroes into the mouths of madness, whether it’s BRAZIL‘s Sam Lowry haplessly dealing with Central Services to poor BARTON FINK facing screenwriting Armageddon in a hotel from hell. But whatever […]Read On »

Movie Review: ENEMY

ENEMY movie poster | ©2014 A24

Stars: Jake Gyllenhall, Melanie Laurent, Sarah Gadon, Isabella Rossellini Writer: Javier Gullon, based on the novel THE DOUBLE by Jose Saramago Director: Denis Villeneuve Distributor: A24 Theatrical Release Date: March 21, 2014 The film ENEMY is based on Jose Saramago’s 2004 novel THE DOUBLE. Saramago is a Nobel Prize-winning author, and it’s entirely possible the source material for this movie is brilliant. ENEMY, however, is not. If it is the chronicle of a disaffected, bored young college professor having a nervous breakdown, we don’t know enough about the man to care and the details of his delusion don’t intrigue us; […]Read On »

In THE DOUBLE, Richard Gere plays former CIA agent Paul Shepherdson, who is dragged back into the field when it looks like the presumed-dead Russian agent he was chasing has resurfaced to kill again. Topher Grace plays Ben Geary, an FBI agent who partners with Paul. Among the people they talk to is Stephen Moyer’s Brutus, an imprisoned KGB assassin who reveres the man the other two are seeking. Moyer, who speaks with his native English accent when not playing characters who hail from elsewhere, speaks with great affection about his best-known character, TRUE BLOOD’s gentlemanly Louisiana vampire Bill Compton. Stars: Richard Gere, Topher Grace, Odette Yustman, Stephen Moyer, Stana Katic, Martin Sheen Writers: Michael Brandt & Derek Haas Director: Michael Brandt Distributor: Image Entertainment Release Date: October 28, 2011 THE DOUBLE is a thriller set in Washington, D.C. that involves both the CIA and the FBI, yet is virtually apolitical. The movie indeed invokes the kinds of spy dramas of yore, like THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE and NO WAY OUT, where a search for an enemy agent leads to all sorts of twists and turns. Writers Michael Brandt & Derek Haas make a concession to present-day filmmaking expectations and pack […]Read On »
