Melissa Leo won a Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in THE FIGHTER as Alice Ward, the real-life mother of prize fighter Mickey Ward, played in the film by Mark Wahlberg. Alice is a tough customer, which describes many of the characters played by the New York-born Leo, including her Baltimore police detective in five seasons of HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS and her New Orleans flood survivor Toni Bernette in HBO’s TREME. “Tough” is perhaps the mildest way to refer to Leo’s Nurse Pam on Fox’s WAYWARD PINES, Thursdays at 9 PM. Adapted by Chad Hodge from the books […]Read On »

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards – The Complete List of Winners

THE KING'S SPEECH wins Best Picture at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, February 27, 2011 | ©2011 A.M.P.A.S.

There’s not much to say about the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, except that as much as they promised to be young and hip by hiring James Franco and Anne Hathaway to host, it was still the same old Academy Awards. Translation: few surprises, a dearth of actual laughs and predominantly canned speeches lacking any emotion or wit. That said, THE KING’S SPEECH took home the Best Picture title, while frontrunners Colin Firth won for Best Actor in SPEECH and Natalie Portman for Best Actress in BLACK SWAN. The full list of winners are below … Best Picture Iain Canning, Emile […]Read On »

The Complete 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nominations

THE KING'S SPEECH movie poster | ©2010 The Weinstein Company

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards announced their nominees early this morning, and there were no huge surprises in most of the categories. The British drama THE KING’S SPEECH rules the nominations with 12, with TRUE GRIT a close second at 10. This “freshness” could actually be a boon to the Joel and Ethan Coen directed western as popularity fades on other nominees. As for the 10 movie, Best Picture category, once again, this is proving to be a very bad mistake. In attempt to be hip and get nominations for more crowd-pleasing films, this thinking has predominantly back-fired with only […]Read On »

For years, Mark Wahlberg has been trying to get a movie made based on blue-collar Irish boxer Micky Ward who managed to beat all odds to become a World Champion. Micky’s life was fraught with tragedy not to mention a fractured relationship with his brother Dicky, a former boxer himself that threw away his shot against Sugar Ray Leonard. Now, after years of development (and almost five years of training Wahlberg put himself through so he would be ready to play Micky when they got the greenlight), THE FIGHTER has finally hit theater screens. Directed by David O. Russell and […]Read On »

Paramount Pictures held the Los Angeles Premiere of THE FIGHTER on December 6th at the Grauman’s Theater in Hollywood. As previously reported in the coverage of THE TEMPEST premiere, both were held the same day, and both across the street from each other. Heading over to the THE FIGHTER immediately after THE TEMPEST finished I was lucky not to have missed any of the stars attending THE FIGHTER premiere. THE FIGHTER is a true story of Dicky Ecklund, portrayed by Christian Bale, who was a former boxing hero that squandered his talents and threw away his shot at greatness. His […]Read On »
