In Part 2 of our exclusive ROBIN OF SHERWOOD interview with actors Michael Praed and Jason Connery (originally published some years ago in EON MAGAZINE), they talk more about their time playing Robin Hood on the British series. Praed was the peasant Robin of Loxley; Connery played Loxley’s successor, the nobleman Robert of Huntingdon. The series is currently streaming on Amazon Prime and Tubi, and available on DVD and Blu-ray. ROBIN OF SHERWOOD provided an education in much more than on-camera combat for both men. “Just doing a lot of film over the eight-month period, I think I learned a […]Read On »

Alexandre Dumas’ novel THE THREE MUSKETEERS has been adapted for the big screen a number of times. Now BBC America has THE MUSKETEERS, which premieres Sunday, June 22. The series keeps seventeenth-century warriors Porthos (Howard Charles), Athos (Tom Burke) and Aramis (Santiago Cabrera) together, joined by the eager D’Artagnan, played by Luke Pasqualino, all still fighting for monarch and country. The storyline diverges somewhat from the familiar plot of the book, but our heroes are still up against the nefarious Cardinal Richelieu (Peter Capaldi). Pasqualino, who hails from Peterborough, England, previously played Paolo in Showtime’s series THE BORGIAS and the […]Read On »

CD Review: THE THREE MUSKETEERS soundtrack

THE THREE MUSKETEERS soundtrack | ©2011 Milan Records

Whether you’re a composer doing a new take on pirates from the Caribbean or England’s most famous detective, it seems impossible now to play it straight for movies determined to hip up the look, and sound of historically iconic characters. Hence, a plethora of soundtracks that apply the incongruities of electric guitar-topped orchestras and satirical ethnic stylings to accompany multiplex costume spectaculars. So make no mistake that Paul Haslinger’s latest iteration of Alexandre Dumas’ swashbucklers is going to give you the gloriously traditional symphonic strains that Herbert Stothart applied to the 1948 version of THE THREE MUSKETEERS, let alone the […]Read On »

© 2010 Showtime | Oliver Platt in THE BIG C - Season One

In Showtime’s new dramedy THE BIG C (which just wrapped up its first season this week), erstwhile suburban housewife Cathy Jamison, played by Laura Linney, turns her life upside-down when she is given a diagnosis of terminal cancer. She doesn’t immediately tell her husband Paul, who is bewildered by Cathy’s sudden (to him) change in behavior. AX: […]Read On »
